I hate big Tech Show weeks !

Now that the fourth big tech show week (CES, MacWorld, 3GSM, Cebit, CTIA) is behind us, I came to a conclusion. I hate these big tech show weeks!

I run a few (2 updated almost daily and 2 updated when I feel like it) tech “newsy” blogs. They are about ayear old and are real “newsy”. I don’t have special access to hardware to do a reviews, I do not even have a deep knowledge of PCs or Cell Phones (topics of my blogs). I consider myself an advanced user. What I do, is find new things that others missed and report them.

Every major and minor company is timing their PR stunts for one of the big tech shows. And prior to the show there’s a  lot of leaks, rumors and hints about new products. A nirvana for a guy like me.

But when the show comes, everything changes. We have 5 to 10 official releases per big vendor touting their new launches and hundreds of announcements from smaller fish. What’s the problem with that?

Well, everyone gets these PRs and everyone writes about them. So unless you have big audience and subscriber base already, nobody will read your posts. And if your blog is younger then 3 years, there’s 90% chance that everyone else will rank above you in search engines.

Let’s face it. It’s not 99′ and even not 2003′. So except for your newsy/scoopy posts, that get linked by some biggies, your new tech blog gets majority of traffic from search engines.

And I will bet that the ranking is not for Nokia N95 or the new iPhone (PC model numbers excluded). It’s for some of the obscure long tail keywords and a very few prime keywords that you yourself wonder how you got them ranked. And it will remain that way for a few years.

To make matters worse, during those big show days the big gadget/tech news outlets have their teams at the show. That means lots of new stories to break and less reporters in home office scouring the Web, looking for new things to report.

So when on a normal week I can get 3-5 or more of my blog posts featured by Engadget and/or Gizmodo and some other biggies, on a show week I’m happy to have 2.

This week is no exception. Last week I was running high with 6 posts linked by biggies and tons of traffic/linklove coming in. This week it all died. Why? One word - CTIA

Lot’s of news to report. But reporting them is sooooooooo…. booooring…. Everyone is doing it and the chance that you’ll rank for it is so small…So why bother

And all the posts (about 5) that I sent to them this week were ignored. So I’m very happy that this show is over.

And it already shows. Yesterday my newsy/scoopy techno post got picked up by some biggies and made it to Techmeme. The traffic is picking up and everything’s is getting back to normal.

Good bye tech show season. I will not miss you!
